Alternate title: スーパーナチュラル・ザ・アニメーション (Japanese)
Creator: Eric Kripke
Genres: action, horror, supernatural
In June 2010, it was announced that the acclaimed Japanese animation studio, MADHOUSE Inc. , would be producing the anime adaptation of Eric Kripke’s popular live-action horror drama, Supernatural. According to the Japanese Warner Brothers website, this will be the company’s first anime adaptation of a popular overseas live-action drama. For those of you unfamiliar with Supernatural, the series chronicles the perilous adventures, misfortunes, and brushes with death of the monster-hunting Winchester brothers, Sam and Dean, across America.
The 22-episode anime season premier will consist of the re-imagination of the live-action series’ best episodes, as well as other original content such as anime-only enemies, expanding upon a number of familiar secondary characters, and prologues detailing the Winchester boys’ childhood. Both the pilot and second episode were released in Japan, February 2nd. “Box 1,” a three-disc Blu-ray and DVD collection containing episodes 3-12, is set for release next week – Wednesday the 9th of March. The rest of the episodes are scheduled to ship April 6th.
I’ve followed up on the on-going six-season original series since its initial release in 2005. I think the balance between action, comedy, romance, and horror, mixed with multicultural mythology and supernatural phenomena, make Supernatural highly entertaining; consequently, I’m expecting nothing less than awesome from the anime (especially since MADHOUSE is behind its production). Both Jared Padalecki and Jensen Ackles have signed on as the voice actors for Sam and Dean, respectively, in the English dub, which means that North American fans can expect to see a subbed/ dubbed version in stores soon. From the articles I've read on the matter, it seems as though Supernatural: The Animation will turn out to be popular with both the original series' fandom as well as the general anime fanbase. This looks promising!
Look forward to it!
Hiroki Touchi as Dean
Yuya Uchida as Sam
Ending Theme:
"Carry on my Wayward Son" by Naoki Takao
Since about three or four seasons back I have been hooked on “Supernatural” myself. I watch it every Friday night and I agree that this does look promising. I am a big fan of anime also and I have seen many anime (like Death Note) turned into live action movies but I have never seen a live action show turned into anime. I am looking forward to seeing how it turns out and wondering exactly what they will change while transforming “Supernatural” into anime. I hope the anime is just as incredible if not better than the original.
ReplyDeleteI watch the show in chunks since I like to record the episodes on my DVR for a later time. Even after 5+ seasons, "Supernatural" is still highly entertaining. You know, you can watch the anime episodes already dubbed and subbed on Youtube. I have to add an update to my blog, though. It turns out Jensen Ackles is only dubbing the LAST two episodes of the anime. Another voice actor is playing the role of Dean in the meantime. He sort of sounds like him. From the first 2 episodes I saw of the anime, it doesn't look too bad.
